Edistyspuolueen pää-äänenkannattaja vaihtaa päätoimittajaa. Janne Virkkunen saa viimeinkin väistyä. Potkuiksikin sellaista on tapana sanoa, kun pomotasolta alennetaan muistelmakirjailijaksi – tulkinta, joka Markkinointi & Mainonnan mukaan on jo ehditty kiistää. Silti voitaneen sanoa, että kaipaavia katseita Virkkusen loittonevaan selkään luodaan melko harvakseltaan. Ainakin, jos luotetaan Painobaarissa toisinaan notkuviin, vähintäänkin epämääräisiin lähteisiin. Ja tietynlainen rakkaudettomuus on saattanut olla jopa molemminpuolista.
Lähtöä on siis odotettu pitkään. Eikä kukaan sanottavasti ole välittänyt seuraajakysymyksestä. ”Kuka tahansa, kunhan se vain ei ole Max Jakobson.” Vielä vuonna 2007 asia herätti paljon enemmän mielenkiintoa.
Janne Virkkunen on jäänyt kansakunnan mieleen melko etäisenä, värittömänä hahmona, joka taitavasti sai kuluttajat uskomaan, että hänellä ei ole sisällöllisiä saati poliittisia ambitioita. Jos edes kaupallisia. Hänestä on pitkän uran jälkeen tullut Helsingin Sanomain Jutta Urpilainen, jonka ulostulot eivät tahdo vakuuttaa, vaan korkeintaan ärsyttää. Se on jo sinänsä saavutus toimittajalle, jonka oli mukana Kekkoslovakiaa ravistelleessa Tamminiemen pesänjakajat -kirjassa. Lehteä jatkuvasti uudistaneelle Nyt-liitteen isälle. Miehelle, jonka sukupuun oksilla riippuvat Snellmanit, Sibeliukset ja Järnefeltit.
Nyt tilanne muuttuu kertaheitolla kutkuttavammaksi. Sukupolvenvaihdokset ovat aina jännittäviä, mutta onpa muitakin erikoisuuksia. Hesari on kuuluisa pakkomielteisestä puolueettomuudestaan. Toimittajien puoluekytkökset Sanomassa ovat kuin homous Yhdysvaltain armeijassa: don’t ask, don’t tell. Mutta Pentikäinen on niinkin kuuluisa keskustalainen, että jopa Antti-Pekka Pietilä arveli saaneensa potkut Ilta-Sanomien päätoimittajan pallilta silkkaa antikepulaisuuttaan.
Liberaalipuolueen – käytännössä oikeistovihreiden – lippulaivan luovuttaminen ”uskovaiselle keskustavaikuttajalle” on herättänyt kollegoissa jännittäviä intohimoja. Pahimman lajin keskustasatraappi Erkki Laatikainen ei kyennyt peittelemään voitonriemua sivaltessaan Yleisradiossa itseään kaksi vuotta nuorempaa Virkkusta tämän ”eloisasta sympatiasta sosiaalidemokratiaa kohtaan” ja kiirehtiessään syleilemään Pentikäisen hengiltä kiimaisessa innossaan:
Mikael Pentikäinen kantaa keskustalaista juuristoa. Hänen isänsä professori Juha Pentikäinen on rantsilalaisia. Hän on uurastanut keskustan avaintehtävissä. Mikael Pentikäinen muistetaan keskustan opiskelijaliiton puheenjohtajana ja järjestön julkaisun Politiikan Puntarin päätoimittajana. Hän on Sanoma Oy:n toimittajakoulun kasvatti, vaateliaiden journalististen ja liiketaloudellisten haasteiden onnistunut kohtaaja.
Turun Sanomien emeritusdemari Aimo Massinen puolestaan keskittyy blogissaan vain kuittaamaan Pentikäisen puoluekuviot harmittomana hömppänä. Tokkopa Mikael nyt sentään antaa Jumalan ja Santeri Alkion häiritä bisneksiä.
Massisen huomio keskittyy samaan kuin suurimmalla osalla keskustelijoista. Pentikäisestä tulee huhtikuussa Helsingin Sanomain kautta aikojen voimakkain ei-Erkko-niminen päätoimittaja. Pestiin on yhdistetty myös kustantajan rooli. Asia, jota kilpailevan leirin iltapäivälehti jo ennätti kehuskella heidän ideakseen.
Pentikäisen nimitys oli sikäli uusi askel Hesarin käytännössä, että nyt sekä journalistinen että taloudellinen vastuu on yksissä samoissa käsissä. Käykö niin, että maan ykköslehden journalismi ”markkinaehtoistuu” entisestään? Hesariahan on jo viime vuosina syytetty siitä, että laatulehtipuheistaan huolimatta se on välillä luiskahtanut viihteeseen sensaatio- ja skandaalilehtien lailla. Tähän saakka on journalistipiireissä vain kuiskuteltu, ettei Hesarin linja ole vain pysynyt toimituksen johdon näpeissä, kun nuoret toimittajat ovat kokeilleet rajojaan.

Kaksoisrooli on vaarallinen. Pentikäisellä on kovan liikkeenjohtajan maine. Ilmaisjakelulehtien sodassa Sanoma News yksinkertaisesti osti kilpailijat pois ja ajoi ostetut lehdet alas yksi toisensa jälkeen. Sanomalaisten avustajasopimusten kohdalla hän on osoittanut vaativansa torppareiltaan kuuliaisuutta, joka on ennen totuttu yhdistämään vain 1800-luvun kartanonherroihin. Hän odottaa maailman taipuvan hänen tahtoonsa.
Mikael Pentikäisen päätoimittaja-kustantajakaudella se voi tarkoittaa mitä tahansa. Aletaanko Helsingin Sanomia tehdä entistäkin kireämmällä kustannusrakenteella ilman journalistisia tavoitteita? Tingittäisiinkö toimittajien ja avustajien oikeuksista? Valokuvista vastaisivat lukijat kännykkäkameroineen. Kolumnien paikalle tulisivat tekstaripalstat. Muuttuisiko Sanoma News samanlaiseksi työyhteisön pahoinvoinnista kuuluisaksi firmaksi kuin vihtiläinen Karprint?
Mutta. Aina on mutta.
Kukaan ei ole vielä pohtinut toista, paljon pahempaa mahdollisuutta. Elokuvamaailmassa tuottaja-ohjaajia on useitakin eivätkä esimerkit aina ole kauniita. Timo Koivusalo on osoittanut, mitä tapahtuu, kun tuottaja-Koivusalo antaa ohjaaja-Koivusalolle vapaat kädet. Entä jos kustantaja osoittaa samaa armeliaisuutta päätoimittajalle? Mikael Pentikäisen Hesarista voi aivan kirjaimellisesti syntyä uusi Kaksipäisen kotkan varjossa.
Sellainen valtavan iso, Vesku Loirin tähdittämä pullantuoksuinen asia, jota kukaan ei halua nähdä edes kännissä.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
